Andre Braugher From Homicide: Life on the Street and Brooklyn Nine-Nine Passed Away At 61
One of Hollywood’s most respected Actor and recipient of 11 Emmy Nominations, Andre Braugher, passed away on Monday at the age of 61 after suffering from a brief illness. He was best known for his iconic roles as a Detective and Police Officer in the acclaimed TV series, Homicide: Life On The Street and Brooklyn Nine-Nine. The news of his death was confirmed by his publicist Jennifer Allen.
Andre Braugher rose to fame during the 90s for his portrayal of the arrogant and persistent Baltimore homicide detective Frank Pembleton on the police procedural drama series “Homicide; Life On The Street.” He also won a lead actor Emmy for his work on the show in 1998, which was also his last year on the show.
However, it was his performance as the Stoic Police Captain Raymond Holt on another police procedural comedy series Brooklyn Nine-Nine that brought him under the spotlight, and he became really popular.
Baugher also won a second Emmy for Outstanding Performance by a Lead Actor for his portrayal of a master criminal in FX’s 2006 crime drama miniseries called “Thief.”
He also received four Emmy Nominations for Outstanding Supporting Actor in a Comedy Series for his portrayal of Captain Raymond Holt in Brooklyn Nine-Nine.
Andre Brauger was born in Chicago in 1962 as the youngest of four children. He studied theatre at Stanford University, and after graduating, he enrolled in the Drama Division at Julliard School.
Braugher’s made his debut in the movie “Glory.” He played the role of Thomas Searles, a Union soldier and a free black man who joined the first black regiment. He also appeared for a short time as a psychiatrist on “House, M.D” as a detective on “Hack” and a middle-aged man on “Men of certain age.”
As his career in TV flourished, Braugher continued to act in feature films such as “Poseidon,” “City of Angels,” “Salt,” “Primal Fear,” “Fantastic Four: Rise of the Silver Surfer” and the like.
Even though Andre Braugher achieved immense popularity in his acting career, he was a family man first and an actor later. During an interview with Variety in 2020, he stated, “I made a choice along the way that Ami and those boys were too important not to spend quantity time with.”
Reflecting on his career, Braughter said, “It’s been an interesting career, but I think it could have been larger.”
“I think it could have spanned more disciplines: directing, producing, all these other different things. But it would have been at the expense of my own life,” He further added. Andy Braugher is survived by his wife Ami Brabson, his three sons John, Michael, and Isaiah, his mother Sally Braugher and his brother Charles Jennings.
