Barbie Touches $1B Within 2 Weeks of Release: First for a Woman-directed Feature
Barbie just reached $1 billion at the box office worldwide.
Margot Robbie and Ryan Gosling reached this gigantic movie milestone on Sunday, within two weeks of its July 21 release. It clashed with the same-day release of Christopher Nolan’s Oppenheimer at the theaters.
The Barbie movie has also collected another $53 million at the domestic level on its third-weekend run, as reported by Deadline. Its success previously set records for Warner Bros Pictures for being the highest-selling film released on a Monday ever, with a $155 million domestic opening. It was also the industry’s biggest opening weekend for a film helmed by a woman.
Captain Marvel, co-directed by Anna Boden and Ryan Fleck, had held the title previously for drawing $153 million back in 2019. Wonder Woman, directed solely by Patty Jenkins, made $103 million in 2017, Variety reports.
Barbie has also managed to earn the biggest opening weekend of 2023. The Super Mario Bros movie has fallen behind, which reportedly earned $146 million earlier this year. In its second week, Barbie has proved its staying power by earning an additional $93 million domestically.
Following Barbie’s immense success, Mattel, the toy company that owns Barbie, has made plans to adapt 14 additional Mattel properties. It includes the Lena Dunham-directed Polly Pocket movie that will star Lily Collins.
Other projects include a Hot Wheels movie produced by J.J. Abrams, a Rock ‘Em Sock ‘Em Robots movie featuring Vin Diesel, a Daniel Kaluuya starrer Barney film, as well as a Major Matt Mason movie featuring Tom Hanks.
Oppenheimer seemed to have benefitted tremendously from featuring alongside Barbie. Nolan’s biopic on theoretical physicist J. Robert. Oppenheimer has become the first R-rated film to earn more than $10 million in a span of 10 consecutive days since its release, Variety has reported, citing the estimates made by Universal Pictures.
Barbie can currently be viewed solely in theatres.
