Melissa Barrera Has Been Fired From Scream Franchise By Production Over Antisemitic Comments On Social Media
Melissa Barrera was fired for her starring role in the widely popular Scream franchise. The production company responsible for firing her said it was because her posts on social media were antisemitic and hate-enticing.
The actress was all set to again assume her reading role in the upcoming Scream VII – we have already seen her in Scream VI and Scream. Reportedly, she has been asked to leave because of her posts on Palestine and Israel.
Melissa’s controversial statements also include a story on Instagram where it seems like she had alluded to a trope about Jews controlling the paps and media. At the time, she wrote, “I have been actively looking for videos and information about the Palestinian side for the last two weeks or so, following accounts, etc. Why? Because Western media only shows the other side. Why they do that, I will let you deduce for yourself.”
Then, there were posts where Melissa compared Gaza to a kind of concentration camp, reportedly even calling the terrible war in the heart of the Middle East ‘ethnic cleansing’ and ‘genocide.’ And that’s not all – she had also referred to Israel as a land that has been ‘colonized.’
The director of Scream VII, Christopher Landon, took to social media to say, “Everything sucks. Stop yelling. This was not my decision to make.”
The decision was made by Spyglass Media Group because “We have zero tolerance for antisemitism or the incitement of hate in any form, including false references to genocide, ethnic cleansing, Holocaust distortion, or anything that flagrantly crosses the line into hate speech.”
Melissa had portrayed the character of Sam Carpenter in both Scream VI and Scream, but now, some big changes are on the backdrop for Scream VII.
