‘Blue Beetle’ Trailer Puts Xolo Maridueña Inside the Suit
The film world is abuzz with the newest character in DC. Blue Beetle. It is being played by Xolo Maridueña of Cobra Kai fame. He was last seen in the hit Netflix series that made him an instant crowd favorite.
Maridueña is showing off a whole new set of skills in the new Blue Beetle trailer, which sees his character Jaime Reyes dealing with the strange suit of armor he has to master. Blue Beetle is based on a DC Comics character and is directed by Charm City Kings helmer Angel Manuel Soto with a script by Gareth Dunnet and Alcocer. Maridueña’s Blue Beetle is one of the few characters that will stay in the DC Universe after Gunn and Safran took over as co-heads of DC Studios in November. Their first movie is Superman: Legacy, which is set to come out in July 2025. Gunn said this version of Blue Beetle was part of the plans of the previous regime, but this one will stay.
Blue Beetle was originally planned for a HBO Max release, when DC was still working on projects for the now-shuttered streaming service. It’s been upgraded to a theatrical date of August 18.
The film comes at a time when DC has had a string of flops, most notably The Flash, and Warner Bros. is hoping for better results for Beetle and December’s Aquaman: The Lost Kingdom, the last DC movie made in the Gunn/Safran period.
“The family aspect to this movie and to the character is inherent to the comics and so special…The family we’ve been able to create in the movie — the mom, dad, uncle, sister, grandmother — I feel like that aspect of being a superhero hasn’t been tapped into a ton”, said Maridueña when speaking to The Hollywood Reporter.
