John Stamos Was Sexually Abused: He Said, “I Packed It Away” Back Then
John Stamos disclosed the traumatic chapter from his childhood for the first time. The 60-year-old Full House alum revealed that he has survived sexual abuse in his memoir “If You Would Have Told Me,” which will be out on October 24. It was his former babysitter who did this to him.
PEOPLE had a talk with him exclusively where he mentioned that “it took me writing the book” to realize that the actions were inappropriate. He said, “I mean, I knew, it was always in the back, and I do so much advocacy for the [survivors]. I felt like I remembered it slightly. It has always been there, but I packed it away as people do, right?”
He recalled, “It was like you’re playing dead, so they’ll stop. But it wasn’t totally aggressive. I don’t know, it was not good.” Stamos first had the revelation while he was writing down a speech for one of the awards he got for doing advocacy for abused children he mentioned, “I started to write it, and that’s when it really came out.”
He continued, “And then I thought, ‘No, tonight is not about me. It’s about the kids. I’m going to pack it away again until the right moment’. Otherwise, I’m a phony f—. It’s like, ‘Come on.’”
From his perspective, he did not want to make it all about himself. He explained, “I didn’t want the headlines to be that, and I didn’t want the book to be over that. It was a page or something, but I felt I had to talk about it. It was weird. It was something that, I think, I was probably like 10 or 11 [when it happened]. I shouldn’t have had to deal with those feelings.” He mentioned that in the beginning, he wanted to tell a hero story, but later he thought of telling a human story.
