Awards0 min read

2022 is about to end, and it finally feels like we have entered award season! While the 95th Academy Awards will take place on 12th March, and final nominations will be released on the 24th of January, 2023, the Academy has managed to please everyone by releasing the Oscars 2023 Shortlists in some of the most important categories.

This precious list has the names of the most-likely nominees, and that too in ten different categories! These categories are International Feature, Documentary Short, Documentary Feature, Animated Short, Live Action Short, Music Score, Sound, Original Song, Visual Effects, and Makeup & Hairstyling.

While we will know for sure the names of all nominees on the 24th, this list is here to give us a feel of what major awards the Academy is actually looking at – keep reading to find out!

Oscars 2023 Shortlists Unveiled: Gossipment’s Holiday Gift To Everyone!

A few weeks ago, Gossipment came up with their ridiculously early 2023 oscar predictions – today, we can check out whether our predictions have any place in the shortlist released by the Academy!

One thing that does stand out in these Oscars 2023 Shortlists is the apparent love for All Quiet On the Western Front, a Netflix Original. And that’s not the only favorite – the German war film seems to be sharing love with Black Panther: Wakanda Forever, a major fan-favorite this year. These films can easily land in as many as five categories.

But the German film is most likely to appear in the International Feature category. Even in this category, the film is probably going to be competing with massive blockbusters from around the world, like,

1. Decision to Leave by Alejandro G and Park Chan-woo, from South Korea.

2. Bardo, False Chronicle of a Handful of Truths by Iñárritu from Mexico.

3. Close by Lukas Dhont from Belgium.

The classic Edward Berger adaptation actually has a pretty great shot at making all the right waves at the show this year. Despite the whole crowded field, the film is slated to obtain some crazy recognition in terms of relevance.

And even blockbusters have a real shot at Oscars 2023 with multiple mentions for massive hits of this year, like,

1. Top Gun: Maverick,

2. Avatar: The Way of Water, and

3. Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness!

While Avatar’s sequel by James Cameron is leading this group with 4 nods in the category called Visual Effects, Top Gun: Maverick managed to get 3 nods, and Doctor Strange gets a single mention. Since Avatar’s sequel is currently getting a lot of attention, it only seems like the sequel will simply repeat what its predecessor has already achieved, at least in terms of bagging multiple nominations.

Moreover, Babylon, The Batman, Guillermo del Toro’s Pinocchio, and Everything Everywhere All At Once has also made their marks by earning 3 nominations each.

The Oscars 2023 Shortlists also feature some popular pop favorites apart from all the critically acclaimed options in different Oscars categories. These categories are inclusive of names like Lady Gaga, Taylor Swift, Selena Gomez, and Rihana. If you have seen Selena’s own documentary called My Mind And Me, then you wouldn’t disagree with us either.

However, the legendary artist Dianne Warren is looking at her 14th nomination for ‘Applause’ from the album, Tell It Like a Woman. This song also has a place in the category called Orginal Song, where RRR, the Indian epic, bags its single mentions for catchy delight, ‘Naatu Naatu.’

These shortlists further feature some of the most expected mentions, such as The Banshees of Inisherin, Women Talking, The Fabelmans, and Elvis. Moreover, the category of documentaries has several solid names like The Janes and Moonage Daydream. However, we couldn’t help noticing the striking absence of Good Night Oppy in this category – it did seem like an absolute shoo-in for the 2023 Oscars!

The actual Academy Award nominations might turn out to be a little different from your expectations. And winning an oscar award will be different from earning multiple nominations. Only time will tell us how true are predictions indeed were – stay tuned to find out in due course! For now, let’s check out the films that have made the cut for now.
