How to watch x men movies in order?

With Mutants like Namor finally introduced in the MCU, many of us are wondering why MCU is still not announcing new X-Men Movies.

We are getting the Fantastic 4 and the Thunderbolts, but there is no talk from Kevin Feige about the mutants of Marvel. But, it will not be long before we hear something about the mutants making their way into the MCU. until then if you want to keep yourself absorbed in the old X-Men movies, then this article is for you.

If you want to watch the x men movies in chronological order, follow their release dates. But if you want to watch them according to X-Men timeline instead, you should follow this article.

X Men Movies In Order: Looking Back Before The Dawn Of MCU

X Men Movies In Order: Looking Back Before The Dawn Of MCU

I am talking about the late 90s or the early 2000s when no such thing as MCU existed. Some fans still cherish those days as peak moments for OG Marvel Movies. Sam Raimi’s Spiderman, Daredevil (although not a fan favorite to many), Ghost Rider, and the Blade movies were gems. But the X-men Franchise was something else altogether.

Stars like Sir Patrick Stewart, Ian Mackinel, and Hugh Jackman made characters like Professor Charles Xavier, Magneto, and Wolverine something iconic, something of the pop culture. Before the big boys from the Avengers dropped on the face of the pop culture phenomenon, these characters ruled. But, despite having 13 movies in the series, X men movies are quite a mess when it comes to understanding their continuity.

They have what you may call the Star Wars effect – resolving major conflicts with the early movies and then getting back to the earliest point in the lives of some of their characters. This is why it is difficult to watch x men movies in order. Even if you start watching the movies according to the years they were released, it might be difficult to understand some of the events and how they connect together.

How To Watch X Men Movies In Order?

Yes, the mutants will definitely storm into the MCU, and it is only a matter of time before they do so. Hugh Jackman has already confirmed the release of his adamantium claws in Deadpool 3, and it is not long before we see the likes of Magneto, Beast, Jean Gray, and other characters in the MCU.
But, before the party arrives in town, let’s look back to the good old days, and here is the chronology you should follow to watch X-Men movies in order.

X- Men: First Class (2011)

X- Men: First Class

Although released way later in time, X-men: First Class of 2011 takes us back to the time when Charles and Erik were friends and went to recruit Logan and heard the F-word in return. The story starts at the Auschwitz concentration camp and sees the origin of Professor X, Magneto, X-men, and the Brotherhood of Mutants.

X-Men: Days of Future Past (2014)

X-Men: Days of Future Past

People who grew up watching the OG x men movies had an excellent experience watching both the OG cast returning alongside their younger versions played by some excellent actors. Most of the movie’s events take place in 1973, while some of them happen in 2013. We see James McAvoy and Sir Patrick Stewart blow our minds with their roles while Wolverine bridges the gaps between the future and the past. Sorry for the spoilers, but “all is NOT revealed” yet.

X-Men Origins: Wolverine (2009)

X-Men Origins: Wolverine (2009)

X-Men Origins- the movie that massacred Deadpool and glorified Wolverine (pun intended); I am sure this is how Ryan Reynolds would have described this movie. The movie explores the stories of Wolverine and dates back to 1845. Majority of the story revolves around the time of the 80s and describes how Hugh Jackman’s Wolverine got those sexy adamantium claws.

X-Men: Apocalypse (2016)

X-Men: Apocalypse (2016)

This one started during 3600 BC when En Sabah Nur or the Apocalypse originated. In this movie, we see the rebooted X-men cast against the much more powerful En Sabah Nur, played by Oscar Issac (currently playing Moon Knight). The climax scene of this movie is a treat to the eyes.

X-Men: Dark Phoenix (2019)

X-Men: Dark Phoenix (2019)

Although fans formed an attachment to the OG crew starring Ian McKinel and Sir Patrick Stewart, the ones starring Micheal Fassbender and James McAvoy were not falling behind. This movie was the last goodbye to the rebooted franchise. It also shows how Jean Grey transformed into the Dark Phoenix. I think I have seen a movie like this later in the MCU (sorry, Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness fans.)

X-Men (2000)

X-Men (2000)

It is difficult to trace X-Men movies in timeline order. But if you are following the order we have gone with, you will make the most of OG X-men Movies.

I know the previous movie in my recommendation list does not offer a smooth transition to the much older X-men of 2000, but it is how you should proceed.

X2: X-Men United (2003)

X2: X-Men United (2003)

The X2: X-Men United (2003) movie sets up the events that would take place in X-Men The Last Stand. Nightcrawler is brainwashed and attempts to murder the president. Some major events happen in this movie. The X-men stand against the evil William Stryker in this movie.

X-Men: The Last Stand (2006)

X-Men: The Last Stand (2006)

X-Men: The Last Stand – the movie where Jean Grey made people both afraid and turned on at the same time. The government has a cure for the mutants, Jean Grey becomes Dark Phoenix, and there is an all-out war between the X-men and the Brotherhood of Mutants. The climax sees one of the most epic scenes in the X-Men franchise (no, I am not spoiling it for you.)

The Wolverine (2013)

The Wolverine (2013)

Hugh Jackman’s Wolverine has been through different historical events, and this movie takes him back to when Hiroshima was nuked. This movie has lost ties with both X-Men origins and X-Men The Last Stand. A large part of the movie’s events takes place in Japan.

Deadpool (2016)

Deadpool (2016)

Deadpool was developed by 20th C Fox and was still not under the current MCU. Although few scenes of the movie explore the X Mansion, it has no direct ties with the X-Men (except for the omniscient, fourth wall-breaking presence of Deadpool/Ryan Reynolds?)

Deadpool (2018)

Deadpool (2018)

The Merc with a mouth returns once again in 2018, this time with Thanos cosplaying as Cable. There are some humorous references to Wolverine and some funny scenes involving the X-Men (just fourth-wall-breaking things).

The New Mutants (2020)

The New Mutants (2020)

If you are watching the x men movies in order, you can keep the New Mutants both inside or outside the X-Men timeline. The story is set in 2029, and apart from its slight connection to Logan and Deadpool, this movie is completely a movie of its own.

Logan (2017)

Logan (2017)

Hugh Jackman’s Logan is a CBM unlike any other. We see a worn-out Wolverine and Charles Xavier in his last days. Mutants are almost extinct in this time period; The movie showcases almost a father-and-son-like Chemistry between Sir Stewart’s Professor X and Jackman’s Wolverine. We also see a soft corner of Wolverine’s heart through Laura, a teenage mutant girl with the same power as Logan’s.

Upcoming X-Men Movies And Shows:

While we are waiting for X-Men to get their actual MCU premier beyond what we have already seen, we do not have multiple X-Men TV shows or films on the way. Basically, the only projects we are aware of are X-Men 97 and Deadpool 3. This will actually be a kind of revival of the actual animated series, like a brand-new original series.

X-Men is slated to hit screens soon – we knew the date was going to be sometime in Fall 2023. In case you are waiting for Deadpool 3’s release, you have to wait another year.

Bottom Line

The mutants are coming soon in the MCU, and some of the previous casts might also reprise their roles. However, if you are thinking of revisiting the old X-men movies, now is the perfect time.

If you want to watch x men movies in order, you should follow the order mentioned in this article. But, if you have any queries related to the same, please reach out to us in the comment section. We will answer them as soon as possible.
