Meghan Markle at World Mental Health Day Summit, “Being a mom is the most important thing” in her life
Prince Harry and Meghan Markle were in New York City on Tuesday to attend the very first in-person summit hosted by their Archewell Foundation – The Archewell Foundation Parents’ Summit: Mental Wellness in a Digital Age. The summit was part of an annual World Mental Health Day Festival organized by Project Healthy Minds for the second time.
Carson Daly, the co-host of the “Today” show was in charge of moderating the discussions at the summit hosted by the Duke and Duchess of Sussex’s Archewell Foundation. The discussion during the Summit was focused on “families who are passionate about building a safer online world for children and teens.”
The Duke and Duchess of Sussex were in the third panel and they were joined by U.S. Surgeon General Vivek Murthy. The couple talked about the challenges of bringing up children in the digital age. During the event, the couple mentioned that they have been working alongside tech companies and parents who have experienced the loss of their children due to the use of social media.
According to People, Marke who has two children with Prince Harry – son Archie, 4, and daughter Lilibet, 2, said, “ A year ago we met some of the families, and at the time, it was impossible not to be in tears hearing their stories because it’s just that devastating.”
Duke and Duchess of Sussex talk about the anxiety of raising children in the Digital Age
Meghan Markle and Prince Harry also talked about the anxiety they are feeling about when their two children who at the moment are “quite young” will begin using social media. They also added that “Social Media isn’t going away” so parents need to come together and focus on finding solutions.
“I think for us, for myself and my wife, with kids growing up in a digital age, the priority here is to again turn pain into purpose and provide as much support as well as a spotlight and a platform for these parents to come together, to heal, to grieve and to also collectively focus on solutions so that no other family anywhere has to go through what they’ve been through,” Prince Harry further added.
Meghan Markle was asked by Carson Daly if being a mom and “ a kick-ass woman” has changed her views on the topic. “Being a mom is the most important thing in my entire life—and of course, being a wife!—but I will say I feel fortunate that our children are at an age, again, quite young, so this isn’t in our immediate future. But I also feel frightened how it’s continuing to change and this will be in front of us,” Meghan replied.
Markle also went on to say, “As they say, being a parent, the days are long, but the years short. So it worries me, but I’m also given a lot of hope and a lot of energy by the progress we’ve made in the past year, being able to have these incredible parents and survivors of this experience share those stories allows us to learn. The more information we have, the more information gathering we’re able to do, the more we can have these high-level conversations and try to move the needle a little bit.”
