Britney Spears and Christina Aguilera: From Friend To Foe
Britney Spears and Christina Aguilera could have been what we call BFFs or best friends forever. Their connection goes way back, and it can be traced back to the time when they were cast together in the show Mickey Mouse Club.
If considered from the point of view of their popularity, both Britney Spears and Christina Agulera rose to stardom before they hit their 20s and became kind of a household name. But over the years, they have become involved in various public spats.
It was not clear where their friendship stands now. However, after the release of Britney Spear’s memoir in October 2023, people now have a picture of where their friendship stands today. People were eager to know if she even mentioned her in her memoir at all.
But what is it all about? Why are people so eager to know about their current friendship status? The feud started in 2003, and their relationship has been scarred ever since.
The Beginning Of This Friendship
The two stars met in the 1990s when both Britney Spears and Christina Aguilera were cast in the Micky Mouse Club. After that, they have been constantly pitted against one another since they kicked their pop career off.
They were both cast for the show along with Ryan Gosling and Justin Timberlake. She and Christina used to be close back then. She told People in a part of an interview, “The Mouseketeers quickly split into our own cliques, divided by the dressing rooms that we shared: Christina Aguilera and I were the younger kids, and we shared a dressing room.”
Back in July 2018, Spears told Entertainment Tonight, “It was a really good time. It was a great time. It was probably one of the most special times in my life, The Mickey Mouse Club.”
After that, Aguilera also shared that she can only think back to that time with love and only love. She deeply enjoyed her time dancing and singing with Spears. She told Entertainment Tonight, “The casting agent was a genius back then to get all of us together.”
Britney Spears and Christina Aguilera: Beginning of the feud
Back in 2003, MTV VMA, Britney Spears and Chistina Aguilera performed alongside Madonna on “Like A Virgin.” However, during the performance, Madonna kissed both the Spears and Aguilera.
But from the video footage, you will not know that. After Madonna kissed Spears, the camera moved to capture Justin Timberlake’s reaction to this (as Timberlake and Spears had recently broken up). This overshadowed Madonna’s kiss with Christina.
Aguilera talked about this in an interview with Radio Andy in 2018 and said, “It was weird. And you know why they cut away for it? Because they cut away to get Justin [Timberlake]’s reaction. I definitely saw the newspaper the next day. It was like, ‘Oh, well, I guess I got left out of that one.”
This incident left bitterness in between Britney Spears and Christina Aguilera. Later that year, she started the feud when she mentioned that Spears was acting cold and weird with her in the rehearsal room.
She further added, “Every time I tried to start a conversation with her – well, let’s just say she seemed nervous the whole time. She seems to me like a lost little girl, someone who desperately needs guidance.”
If you are looking for the exact part that started this tiff between the two, then it is. This is the comment which caused trouble. Spears did not like what Aguirela said and shared a different story, her version of the event.
In an interview with Blender, Spears said, “A lost girl? I think it’s probably the other way around. I can’t believe she said that about me. She comes up to me in a club in front of all these people and tries to put her tongue down my throat!”
Britney Did Not Hold Back
Britney Spears did not take Christina’s comments lightly and spoke her heart out during the interview with Blender. She said, “I say, ‘It’s good to see you,’ and she goes, ‘Well, you’re not being real with me.’ I was like, ‘Well, Christina, what’s your definition of real? Going up to girls and kissing them after you haven’t seen them for two years?‘”
She gave a clear picture of their friendship, which had gotten cracked after that. She said, “When someone has been rude to you so many times, it’s like, ‘You know what, Christina, I’m really not about the fake anymore.‘”
Aguilera again lashed back at her former friend in an interview with Us Weekly in 2004. She said, “I know Britney. She’s not trailer trash, but she sure acts that way.”
She even talked about the engagement ring that Spears bought after she got engaged to Kevin Federline, her backup dancer. She said, “It looks like she got it at QVC.”
The feud did not just end here. There were instances where it felt like their broken relationship was getting back on track.
Getting Back Together (2005-2008)
In 2005, Spears tried to mend her friendship with Aguirela and made a gesture to reconnect with her. The official website of Spears had come up with a post that said Britney would love to be friends with Christina. Moreover, the post complimented her recent looks as well.
The sweet gesture was returned by Aguirela when Spears birthed her first son, Sean. Christina sent Britney a present as she stepped on a new milestone. She talked to the Daily Mail and talked about how the media has been talking about them not getting along.
She said, “It must have seemed as if we were competing with each other, but, in reality, Britney is someone that I used to hold hands with. We were silly little girls together on The Mickey Mouse Club. What a journey it has been for both of us!”
The Rivalry Was Back On (2012)
Spears started her reality TV journey with The X-Factor in the 2012 season, where she was a judge, and Aguilera was also the coach on The Voice at the time.
However, it was Simon Cowell who tried to dig up old dirt. He told TMZ that Britney was not “going to appreciate the fact that Christina – who has been a bit of a rival – isn’t allowing Britney to have a night of her own.”
Christina did not engage herself in this controversy. During a press conference in 2012, Aguilera told the reporters, “We were very close, and our paths have always crossed and, interestingly, they will continue to cross. I’m not down with [pitting women against women] at this point of my life… It’s a fun thing to be a part of, and I think she’ll have fun with it.”
Christina Suggested Doing A Duet With Britney (2018)
Christina appeared in the Jimmy Kimmel Live! show in 2018, and mentioned that she believed all they needed was to get back on social media together to finish off this unpleasant fued that has been going on for quite a long time.
She said, “If we had social media back then, we would have probably done a song or something together and squashed it. Back in the day, when people were comparing me to other artists… I would have loved to be able to squash [any beef] before having an interview.”
Christina’s Gesture Was Too Little Too Late (2021)
By the end of 2021, Britney Spears went on trial to end her conservatorship almost after a decade. This is when Christina showed her support and joined the #FeeBritney movement.
She posted on X (formerly Twitter), “These past few days, I’ve been thinking about Britney and everything she is going through. It is unacceptable that any woman, or human, wanting to be in control of their own destiny might not be allowed to live life as they wish. “
She further added, “To be silenced, ignored, bullied or denied support by those ‘close’ to you is the most depleting, devastating and demeaning thing imaginable. The harmful mental and emotional damage this can take on a human spirit is nothing to be taken lightly.”
However, it did not do much for Britney. She said Christina’s comment was hypocritical after the comment was made. Moreover, she posted two different videos. One had Lady Gaga, who was speaking for her, and the other one had Christina, who refused to make a comment on this matter.
In January 2022, Aguilera again tried to mend their friendship and talked about the conservatorship getting terminated. Moreover, she mentioned that she would definitely be careful as the topic is sensitive and would love to have a conversation with Britney Spears.
Is It “The End” For Britney Spears And Christina Aguilera?
Well, things were starting to look better when Britney Spears made a body-shaming comment about Aguilera and her dancers. In September 2022, Britney shared an image of Rodney Dangerfield and gave the caption, “I mean, if I had Christina Aguilera’s dancers, I would have looked extremely small. I mean, why not talk about it??”
Well, she did not hold anything back and lashed out at Aguirela, which caused a lot of backlash. Even though Spears mentioned in another post that she was not being critical about Christina’s body, the damage was already done.
Christina had already unfollowed Britney on social media, and it seems like this is the end of Britney Spears and Christina Aguilera.
