Richard Roundtree, Hollywood’s First African-american Action Hero, Passes Away At 81
Richard Roundtree, renowned for being Hollywood’s first African-American action hero, has died of cancer at the age of 81. The veteran actor passed away on Tuesday afternoon at his home in Los Angeles. His family was by his side during his last moments. Two months ago, he was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer.
His death was confirmed by his long-term manager, Patrick McMinn in a statement. In his statement, McMinn also observed that “Richard’s work and career served as a turning point for African American leading men in film.”
“The impact he had on the industry cannot be overstated,” he further added.
Richard Roundtree is best known for his lead role in the original “Shaft” movie franchise. Apart from the original film “Shaft” (1971), the franchise also includes the sequel “Shaft’s Big Score!” (1972) and “Shaft In Africa” (1973).
Richard Roundtree was nominated for New Star of the Year at the Golden Globes for his portrayal of the lead character, Detective John Shaft, in the “Shaft” movie franchise. Roundtree also played the role of Detective John Shaft in the 1973 TV series of the same name.
The veteran actor returned as Detective John Shaft in the reboot of “Shaft” franchise in 2000, where he starred alongside Samuel L. Jackson, who played the role of Shaft’s nephew. He had also reprised the role in the 2019 version.

Aside from being the face of the “Shaft” franchise, Richard Roundtree has also starred in numerous movies and TV series over the years. This includes films such as “Se7en,” “Speed Racer,” “Earthquake,” “Brick,” and TV series such as “Roots,” and “Being Mary Jane.” Richard Roundtree is survived by five children – daughters Morgan, Nicole, Tayler and Kelli Roundtree and son James Roundtree.
