Single Soon Is Not About Former Beau The Weeknd: Selena Gomez Denies Speculation
Selena Gomez might be singing about being single soon in her latest track, but that does not mean she is talking about somebody in particular.
After dropping her very first single track of 2023 on Friday, the 31-year-old pop star is busy clearing the air that the song is SO not about her former beau, The Weeknd.
The actress-and-singer actually replied to a post on Instagram about the speculation made by HollywoodLife. The photo featured Gomez with the 33-year-old Starboy hitmaker at the 2017 Met Gala with the caption, “fans believe that [‘Single Soon’] is about her romance with #The Weeknd. What do you think?”
The pop singer shut down the rumor with a “Couldn’t be more false” reply in the comments.
While some fans were speculating that the song had certain references to the singer’s relationship with the Blinding Lights singer, in spite of the couple breaking up almost six years ago. Early in the song, Gomez sings, “Maybe I’ll just disappear / I don’t wanna see a tear / And the weekend’s almost here,” though Gomez absolutely refuted any potential nod to The Weeknd.

Previously, Gomez and The Weeknd were linked for nearly ten months in 2017. The two artists became involved briefly after Gomez ended things with Bieber and The Weeknd broke up with Bella Hadid.
Originally, the couple was seen together on a dinner date in January 2017 – the pair confirmed their relationship later that month in public.
The Calm Down singer even joined the Die For You performer on his much-hyped international tour. In the same year, during Gomez’s battle with Lupus, the pop star underwent a kidney transplant. Sources close to the couple told PEOPLE at the time that The Weeknd was by Gomez’s side during her recovery.
In October 2017, the pair split up, and since then, Gomez has mentioned that they have managed to stay friends since their breakup.
After their split, Gomez rekindled her on-and-off romance with 29-year-old Bieber between October 2017 and March 2018. Since then, Gomez has remained relatively private about her love life and was briefly linked to only Drew Taggart (of The Chain smokers) and was also seen stepping out on a date with Zayn Malik.
What Is Single Soon About Then?
As per the former Disney star, Single Soon is an ode to singlehood and more about self-love as well as self-empowerment. After the song was released, Gomez wrote on Instagram, “Thank you, guys, for all the love on Single Soon!!! It’s a playful anthem about being comfortable in your own skin and loving your own company… and it’s also really fun to dance to! 💞”
The song, which was produced by Cashmere Cat and Benny Blanco, marked the pop star’s return to music for the very first time since she released My Mind & Me last year in November.
While teasing her new track, Gomez shared on Instagram, “Since I’m not quite done with SG3, I wanted to put out a fun little song I wrote a while back that’s perfect for the end of summer.”
