In 2022, along with announcing the release date for Stranger Things Season 4, the creators also released an open letter addressed to fans of Stranger Things. In that letter, the duo made it clear that season 4 of Stranger Things is the penultimate season, and the fifth season will be the last. 

Since then, fans have been eagerly waiting for the fifth and final season of Stranger Things. Here are some of the things that fans may expect to see in Stranger Things season 5.

The Return of the Gang

The core group of kids that we have grown to love will be returning for Season 5. This includes Eleven (Millie Bobby Brown), Mike (Finn Wolfhard), Dustin (Gaten Matarazzo), Lucas (Caleb McLaughlin), and Will (Noah Schnapp). We will also see the familiar faces of Joyce (Winona Ryder), Chief Hopper (David Harbour), and Steve (Joe Keery), along with the teenagers – Steve, Nancy, and Johnathan. 

Reuniting the original gang in the last season will lend a nostalgic feeling to the ending for loyal fans who have been around since season 1. 

New Cast Members joining the show

The creators of the show had previously stressed the point that no new characters will be introduced in this season. Even if there are any new characters in season 5, they will not get a lot of screen time. Instead, the full focus will be on already-established characters. Fans can expect to see at least one new character in Stranger Things Season 5. During its 2023 TUDUM event, Netflix declared that Terminator actress Linda Hamilton will be joining the cast of Stranger Things.

Possible Time Jump in Season 5

If you are expecting season 5 of Stranger Things to take off right after the events of season 4, then you will probably be disappointed. It is not known exactly where and when the events of Season 5 will be set. But as divulged by Ross Duffer to T VLine, “I’m sure we will do a time jump.” 

The Possibility of a time jump makes sense. This is because most of the lead actors in Stranger Things started off when they were kids, and now they have mostly grown up. A time jump can help in explaining why the main cast does not look like kids anymore.

Clarity on Upside Down Timeline

If you have always wondered how time works in  Upside Down and wanted to know more about the place, then hold on tight. In season 5, you are going to get all the answers to your questions about Stranger Things.

There are several fan theories online about the Timeline in the Upside Down. The creators of the show have confirmed that they may be correct in some aspects. The Duffer brothers have also revealed that there is a specific reason why the Upside Down has remained frozen in time from when Will Byers went missing. 

The reason will be explained in detail in the final season. Moreover, an explanation of how Upside Down works will form the core of the Season 5 plot.

Stranger Things Season 5: Expected Release Date and Number of Episodes

Stranger Things Fans may have to wait a while for the fifth and final season of the series. This is because creators have not yet mentioned any potential release window. It is also not known when the official trailer for the series will drop.

While filming was expected to begin in June 2023, production was paused due to the WGA strike.

The Duffer Bros tweeted at the time: “Duffers here. Writing does not stop when filming begins. While we’re excited to start production with our amazing cast and crew, it is not possible during this strike. We hope a fair deal is reached soon so we can all get back to work. Until then — over and out. #wgastrong.”

We also don’t yet know what release model the new season will take. Seasons 1 to 3 all released their entire seasons in one go, while season 4 was released in two volumes, with volume 1 containing seven episodes and volume 2 containing two.

Despite lengthy episode runtimes, season 4 was a huge success and even broke viewership records. So the best bet for creators of Stranger Things is to recreate the success of Season 4. 

However, on the Happy Sad Confused Podcast, the Duffer Brothers assured their listeners that season 5 will feature shorter episode runtimes compared to season 4. 

While nothing is known about the expected release date or the official trailer, the Duffer Brothers have disclosed the title of the first episode of Stranger Things – The Crawl. It doesn’t reveal anything about the storyline, and fans around the world have been pondering over  what the Title means

Fan theories and predictions – what could happen next?

Now that we’ve pondered over the new characters joining Stranger Things Season 5, it’s time to dive into some fan theories and predictions about what could happen next. Brace yourselves, this is where things get interesting!

Fan Theory 1:

In the season 4 Final, Max Mayfield died for a minute when she lured Vecna inside her mind using her darkest thoughts. Vecna resists Eleven. He then attacks Max using his signature move – her eyes start bleeding and then go white, and she levitates. Vecna also breaks her limbs. Though Eleven manages to revive her, she is braindead and in a coma at the end of season 4. 

Some fans believe that Max will be instrumental in defeating Vecna once and for all. Whereas other fans believe that Eleven will probably have to travel inside Vecna’s mind to bring back Max.

Fan Theory 2: 

Some Fans believe that season 5 may introduce a new monster.  According to fans, this new monster was responsible for causing a small earthquake while climbing the stairs in Season 4, episode 9. This new monster may also be responsible for the wails that Eddie, Robin, Steve, and Nancy heard when they were in the Upside Down at Skull Rock. This is because wails were nothing like the sounds made by Demogorgon or DemoBat
