We all know the numerous jewels that Disney has released and created over the years, but there are many more great films that are tagged as underrated Disney movies. But what are these films, and are they really worth a watch?

Underrated Disney Movies

Underrated Disney Movies

This year Disney is turning 100 this year in the month of January. So, if you want to know more about underrated Disney movies, then we have the best movies for you to watch.

Although these movies are termed as “unpopular Disney movies,” just because they are unpopular doesn’t mean they are not worth your time. So, if you are looking for such movies, then here is a whole list of such movies that you can watch.

Not all Disney movies are able to create such a magical experience, as most of the popular like Cinderella, Lion King, Beauty and the Beast, and Frozen.

There are a lot of movies out there that are just good but come a little short in producing that amount of magical experience for their audience.

Underrated Animated Movies

Underrated Animated Movies

Animated movies are what made Disney what they are today. Disney cartoons and animated characters have left a huge mark on our hearts.

Whenever we think of Disney, we think of the huge mouse ears of Mickey Mouse; no wonder he is one of the most popular animated characters in the world.

But today, we are talking about the underrated Disney movies, and among the animated genres, the most underrated but great movies are listed below.

The Adventures of Ichabod and Mr.Toad

The Story of Ichabod Crane and Mr. Toad may not be as popular as some of the more commercial movies of Disney, but it is definitely an emotionally awakening one among the underrated Disney movies.

Atlantis: The Lost Empire

One of the more shocking underrated Disney movies is Atlantis: The Lost Empire. The movie has amazing character development, a fast-paced plot, and an all-over adventure-based storyline, that will be great for any audience.

The Hunchback of Notre Dame

One of the most heart-aching movies of Disney is The Hunchback of Notre Dame. The story of Quasimodo and Esmeralda is a story that many can relate to. The Movie is full of many amazing musical notes like, ‘Sanctuary.’

Tarzan

The animated version of the movie Tarzan is shockingly termed as an underrated Disney movie, but I don’t know how. For most 90’s kids, the love story between Jane Porter and Tarzan is a beautiful love story that is worth seeing ball you Disney lovers out should definitely watch it.

90’s Disney Movies Nostalgia

90’s Disney Movies Nostalgia

Although the things Disney is coming out with now are great, as a 90s kid myself, I can’t get over the simpler days when Disney movies were just magical.

For ’90s kids, living in nostalgia is becoming a part of our lives, so here is a taste of that 90’s nostalgia that you should crave.

Hocus Pocus

Nothing can be better than the story of three witches and the three teenage girls racing against time to stop those evil witches from becoming immortal.

The movie is a great example of a fun family movie. No wonder a sequel of this film is being made after so many years in 2022, with the original cast.

The Lizzie Mcguire Movie

We all remember the massively popular The Lizzie McGuire Show, but it doesn’t make any sense as to why The Lizzie McGuire Show is on the list, but it is what it is. The movie beautifully captures the essence of the spunky teen Lizzie McGuire, played by Hillary Duff.

Camp Rock

For the kids of the early 2000s, there was no One Direction or BTS, the only boyband we knew and thirsted over was The Jonas Brothers. The three brothers stole our hearts with their cute looks and amazing vocals.

This is why their film starring Demi Lovato was regarded as an instant hit, but it still remained underrated. Although if you wanna see the movie Camp Rock then it is a great way to pass your time.

The Cheetah Girls

Well, girl bands were all the rage back in the 2000s, and among them, the best was The Cheetah Girls. The spunky and sassy personalities of each of the girls and their tunes and dance moves are what made the movie a cult hit, with simple ‘cheetah-licious’ fashion by all the girls.

Confessions of a Teenage Drama Queen

The wacky movie Confession of a Teenage Drama Queen is something that is probably just a one-time watch, but hey, that is enough to enjoy the weird teenage drama of the 2000s that made us cringe.

The film is the best example of being a cringe-worthy movie, but if you like something like that, then this is a great movie for you.

Disney Drama Movies For The Whole Family

Disney Drama Movies For The Whole Family

One of the best movie genres is the Drama movies made by Disney, there are a variety of ways they go about creating a sense of drama and mystery in their movies. So, if you’re interested in knowing the underrated Disney movies in the drama genre, then here they are.

The Rocketeer

The movie Rocketeer is an energetic, charming, and quite entertaining superhero film. But compared to the films Disney is producing now (with Marvel, of course), it is way more poetic and creates a big on-screen effect.

That is what is lacking in The Rocketeer, but even then, this film is worth a watch, no matter what.

Remember The Titans

One of the best heartwarming, feel-good movies made by Disney is Remember The Titans. The spirit of high school football and the powerful emotions shown onscreen is one of the best things ever.

The integration of different races and cultural barriers is what makes this movie highly relatable and relevant.

Return To Oz

The dark-fantasy Disney film, which is Return of Oz is a creepy take on the second of the three Oz books.

Although this is an underrated Disney sequel, the film has a huge cult following. So, if you still haven’t seen this movie, you should definitely see this movie at least once.

White Fang

The undying companionship between a man and a dog is something that is very beautiful. That is exactly what has been shown in White Fang, who is a wolf-dog breed dog, and his relationship with Jack Conroy, played by Ethan Hawke. The film is based on a novel of the same name, written by White Fang.

The Journey of Natty Gann

This is yet another great example of the everlasting bond between an animal and a human. Well in this case it is a girl and a wolf, who shadow her in her journey as a protector. The plot of the movie is simple, yet it is heartwarming and comforting.

Disney Live-Action Movies

Disney Live-Action Movies

One of the types of movies that Disney is working on right now is live-action movies. And when it comes to original live-action movies, Disney has been doing great work ever since.

Yet a few of the films listed here as underrated Disney movies are just weird to even think about. But the list still goes as such.

The Parent Trap

A modern spin on the 60’s original The Parent Trap stars Lindsey Lohan as her debut work. The movie is just beautiful when it comes to a remake of a film.

The story of two twin sisters meeting for the first time in a summer camp and working together to bring their divorced parents together again is something that is worth watching over and over again.

Enchanted

What happens when your favorite Disney princess comes to the real world? Will her prince come to her rescue? Or she falls for a normal regular guy in the real world?
This movie is for all the fans of Disney Princess movies. And if you want to see the sequel of this movie, then it was released recently in 2022.

The Kid

Indeed, Bruce Willis can’t do a bad movie, and the same goes for the movie The Kid. Although Rotten Tomatoes calls it “annoyingly simple,” I mean, is that really a bad thing? We have enough complications in life; let the movies be simple.

We all thought of the possibility of meeting our younger selves when we grow up, and that is exactly what happens in the movie. Give it a watch to know what happens then.

Honey, I Shrunk The Kids

When you are ¼ inches tall, even your house seems like an adventure park, and that is exactly the case you see in the hilarious adventure movie Honey, I Shrunk The Kids.

The movie is fun for the whole family and is a great film, unlike most Disney films, which is why it is underrated.

Tron

There are a great number of Disney movies that failed to become mainstream but still remained cult favorite, like the sci-fi movie Tron.

Released in the 1980s, you might find the graphics a bit awkward and old, but it is obvious the story works at a fast pace and is full of entertainment value.

Gossipment’s Bonus Section: The Underrated Movies From Recent Times!

Yes, we are not yet done! Gossipment has picked two of the most underrated Disney movies from recent years. Stay tuned and check these out!

Onward:

In 2020, Pixar had two major releases – Soul and Onward. While Onward was a stronger body of work, Soul won the Oscar that year for Best Animated Feature. In my humble opinion, Onward should have definitely been nominated for the Best Picture Category.

Onward is an imaginative and heartwarming film with impressive animation and engaging storytelling. Chris Pratt as Barley Lightfoot and Tom Holland as Ian Lightfoot were absolutely brilliant. The film radiated chemistry as brothers on a journey, a quest of sorts to spend another day with their deceased father.

This epic adventure is narrated in the modern world where magic is relevant, eliciting laughter and getting our tear ducts into overdrive at the same time. The movie is a true standout in the animated library of Disney.

Robin Hood:

Apart from 1992’s Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves, Disney’s animated interpretation of Robin Hood is perhaps the only other almost perfect adaptation of this timeless tale. The cast did a great job on the vocals – Brian Bedford played Robin Hood, and Peter Ustinov played Prince John. The talented cast did a fab job breathing life into beloved classic characters.

The movie revolves around the primary themes of loyalty, justice, and taking a stand against the oppressed, which resonated well with audiences of all age groups, creating an appeal that’s timeless.

The attention to detail and artistry brought the animal kingdom of Robin Hood’s world to life with remarkable anthropomorphic characters. Moreover, the animation style is expressive and fluid – one that captures the true essence of all the characters, immersing us in the vibrant, colorful world of Sherwood Forest.
