George Clooney Mentioned That Matthew Perry Was Not Happy After Scoring Sitcom Friends
George Clooney mentioned that Matthew Perry was not happy after he bagged “Friends” because of his addiction to drugs and alcohol. He spoke with Deadline on Tuesday, Clooney said that it was Perry’s dream to play a role in any sitcom. And he got that when he was chosen to play the role of “Chandler Bing” in 1994 for “Friends.”
But because of the addiction, it was difficult for him to move forward. 62-year-old Clooney told the Outlet, “He was a kid and all he would say to us, I mean me, Richard Kind and Grant Heslov, was, ‘I just want to get on a sitcom, man. I just want to get on a regular sitcom and I would be the happiest man on earth.’”
He added, “And he got on probably one of the best ever. He wasn’t happy. It didn’t bring him joy or happiness or peace.” At that time, Perry was shooting for Friends, and Clooney was shooting for ER. Both the shows were hit back in the day.
Success And Money Could Not Bring Perry Happiness
Clooney referred to Perry’s confessions which he wrote in his memoir, “Friends, Lovers, and the Big Terrible Thing.” The ER actor said, “We just knew that he wasn’t happy and I had no idea he was doing what, 12 Vicodin a day and all the stuff he talked about, all that heartbreaking stuff. And it also just tells you that success and money and all those things, it doesn’t just automatically bring you happiness. You have to be happy with yourself and your life.”
He talked about the impression Perry had on him when they met. He said, “I knew Matt when he was 16 years old. We used to play paddle tennis together. He’s about 10 years younger than me. He was a great, funny, funny, funny kid.” 54-year-old Perry was found dead in his Hollywood mansion worth 4 million dollars on October 28.
